Laurie Weir was elected vice president in spring 2021 after previously holding the positions of secretary and president. Looking over the past three years, she is pleased that the arts council has not only survived but thrived during both the Covid-19 epidemic and the uncertainty associated with the planning and eventual renovation of the building.
Laurie has increased the online presence of the arts council through developing a professional-appearing website, establishing an online gift store, online gallery shows and putting the Light up the Arts sale online. Her energies in 2021-2022 will be directed toward reorganizing and promoting the gift store while also negotiating legal agreements and obtaining funds for the renovated building.
In her hometown of Saskatoon, Laurie volunteered with the Open Door Society which helps new Canadians settle into their new home and was involved in amateur theatre. In Summerland, she has served on the board of the Chamber of Commerce. Laurie has degrees in English from the University of Saskatchewan and Interior Design from the University of Manitoba. She is currently employed as an customer service representative for Shopify.
Laurie says she is more of an appreciator of art than creator, nonetheless, she writes, sews, and does watercolours. “Art fulfils the human need to make our mark by being creative,” she said.
