Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride returns to Penticton
Penticton BC: One of Canada’s most recognized icons, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Musical Ride, will perform at the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC) on Saturday July 20, for two captivating shows.
“We’re very excited to bring the Musical Ride back to the Okanagan. The show hasn’t been in Penticton in over a decade,” noted Gwen Shaw, President of the Summerland Rodeo Grounds – Equine Development Committee. “The Musical Ride makes its way to BC every four years. In the past, the Musical Ride wowed audiences in Summerland and Oliver. July 20 will be a day of excitement. We hope to see you then.”
The RCMP Musical Ride represents a colourful Canadian tradition. The troop of 32 horses and riders will perform a variety of cavalry drills choreographed to music. Working through a unique medium, they support the RCMP community policing efforts throughout Canada. The Musical Ride was developed in 1876 by early members of the North-West Mounted Police to display their riding ability and entertain the local community. It has evolved over the decades into a uniquely Canadian performance enjoyed by tens of thousands of spectators every year. Members of the Musical Ride are first and foremost police officers. They each have at least two years’ experience in active police work before volunteering for duty with the Musical Ride.
When asked about the show, Tony Acland, Penticton’s Musical Ride Master of Ceremonies and Announcer replied, “If you’ve never been, you must go. It will bring out the Canadian in you.”
In addition to the most notable and Canadian cavalry show, Hearts of the West, a family of trick riders will showcase their exceptional speed and horsemanship skills. The five siblings travel Western Canada’s rodeo circuit, including the Pacific National Exhibition and the Calgary Stampede.
Tickets for the Musical Ride at the SOEC are $20 for adults and $17 for students (7 to 18) and seniors (64 and older). For children 6 and under, tickets are free* when purchased in person. (*Service fees for online and phone purchases/inquiries apply.) Tickets can be purchased at www.ValleyFirstTix.com, by telephone at 1.877.SOEC.TIX (763.2849) or in person at the Valley First Box Office (at the SOEC) and Wine Country Visitor Centre today, at 10:00 a.m.
Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Summerland Rodeo Grounds – Equine Development Committee. The committee supports improvements to the Summerland Rodeo Grounds.

Spaces still available at upcoming Antiques in the Attic
May 2, 2013 – Kelowna, BC: Spaces are still available! Learn the value of your art, antiques, and collectibles from the professionals. Join Anthony Westbridge, of Westbridge Fine Arts in Vancouver, and local art and antiques appraiser, Peter Blundell, for Antiques in the Attic on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, 2013, from 10 am to 5 pm.
Anthony Westbridge will give opinions on value of works of art, with the possible prospect of taking some pieces to Vancouver for inclusion in one of his live, online monthly auctions. Westbridge is available to assess art of all origins and mediums, but is particularly interested in oil paintings created by Canadian artists. An entire fifteen-minute session may be required to assess one work of art.
Referred to as one of Canada’s leading art experts, Anthony Westbridge is the publisher of Collector’s Dictionary of Canadian Artists at Auction, and the Canadian Art Sales Index. Copies of the Westbridge books will be available for sale at the event.
Peter Blundell will be giving opinions on value of antiques, collectibles, and prints or
reproductions, with some exceptions. He cannot appraise jewellery, coins, stamps, guns,
and wristwatches. However, pocket watches and swords may be brought in. Individuals who wish to have large furniture pieces assessed are asked to bring in a portion of the piece, e.g., a drawer, along with a photograph, and the item’s measurements. Please note that items thought to be over four hundred years old cannot be assessed at this event.
Fifteen-minute evaluation sessions will be held throughout the two days, from 10 am to 5 pm. Each session allows for viewing of up to three items with Peter Blundell, or an original work of art with Anthony Westbridge. The cost for a session is $40.00 for Kelowna Art Gallery members, and $50.00 for non-members. Partial proceeds from this event will support the Kelowna Art Gallery’s educational programs and exhibitions.
To make an appointment, please call the Kelowna Art Gallery at 250-762-2226. Payment is
