Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Summerland Arts Centre, 9533 Main Street

Doors open at 6:30pm, Discussion begins at 7:00pm

Drug addictions are individual, but excessive petroleum dependence has now penetrated every aspect of modern Canadian society. Our cities and our economies are hooked on oil. Psychologists say the first step in controlling an addiction is to recognize it. Author, ecologist and self-identified petroleum junkie Don Gayton will lead an interactive discussion on confronting energy consumption as an addiction—how to name it, take ownership of it, and begin to treat it.

Gayton’s writing includes award-winning books of popular non-fiction, including Man Facing West, Okanagan Odyssey, and Interwoven Wild. He is also the author of several scientific publications, and his work has appeared in Canadian Geographic. Don has previously won the Canadian Science Writers Award, and has been shortlisted twice for the BC Book Awards. He was recently the Roderick Haig-Brown Writer in Residence at the University of Victoria. Don resides in Summerland.

Admission by donation Coffee and refreshments available
The Philosophers’ Café would like to thank all of you who have helped to make this event a success, especially our presenters James Miller, Allison Rennie, Norah Keating, Rosemary Thomsom, Andrea Gunner and Don Gayton. We are grateful to these individuals for sharing their knowledge and passion.

Sponsored by the Summerland Community Cultural Development Committee
and the Summerland Community Arts Council
