Confucianism in the Modern World: Are the teachings of Confucius and his disciples relevant to the modern and “post modern” industrial societies? Moderated by René Goldman.
Confucianism was the dominant component of China’s cultural tradition for two millenia. It has also influenced the development of the cultural traditions of Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. As the ideological underpinning of government and social values and relationships it has weathered many an upheaval; it even surprisingly outlived the most radical revolutions of twentieth century China.
Summerland resident and regular contributor to the Philosophers’ Cafés, René Goldman, is a retired UBC – Vancouver professor of the History of Chinese Civilization. Multilingual and with an experience of living in different countries, including five years in China, his interests and research cover a wide range of subjects and cultures.
