July 6th – The South Okanagan Big Band
Formed as a not-for-profit group in 2011 by Richard de Jonge and a small group of fellow music enthusiasts, the South Okanagan Big Band (SOBB) is still a young band. What brings us together each week is the joy of playing those old swinging tunes of the 1930’s and 40’s made popular during the Big Band Era, plus some choice diverse tunes that have come along since!
The band has most recently been practicing this past year at the new and beautiful Martin Street Art and Music Gallery, and has put on several dances both there and elsewhere. As a result of playing many dances in the last couple of years, the band has a reasonably good repertoire of good old dance tunes. We are in the process of expanding our horizons by playing in different venues and in adjoining communities.
Our current director is Richard de Jonge, who has enjoyed a learning curve in doing so over the last couple of years. Richard keeps our group topped up with new music to play, and he also plays sax, sings, and has played key roles on the Board of Directors since the formation of the band.
Our members comprise a range of abilities and backgrounds, from intermediate to experienced and a few seasoned professional players. Our current personnel are as follows:
Rhythm: Josh Craven (bass), Barb Mackenzie (piano),
Rod Rose (drums), Ken Tapping (guitar)
Saxes: Richard de Jonge, Don McIntosh, Dale McKinnon,
Susan Norie, Catherine Scott-Taggart
Trombones: Sandy Andres, Sheila Cossette, Terry Grove, Colin Traynor
Trumpets: Kyle Bingham, Roli Ebneter, Michael Mott, Gary Rich
