Arts Appreciation Award

The Arts Appreciation Award is given annually to the individual who has made the greatest contribution to the development, promotion or appreciation of the arts, directly or indirectly. The person receiving the award need not be an artist or craftsperson themselves. Nominations are welcomed from anyone in the community.

The 2011 Arts Appreciation will be presented on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the 74th Annual Community Awards Gala being held at the Summerland Waterfront Resort & Spa.

The 2010 Arts Appreciation Award was presented February 5, 2011 at the 73nd Annual Summerland Community Excellence Awards gala to Joan Lansdell.

Joan LWinston Churchill said that:
“We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.”

Joan Lansdell is a former public health nurse and has participated in many volunteer activities in our community. She is also a wonderful artist. She was trained in oils, watercolours and pastels, but she works primarily in her favourite medium, pastels and portrays the vibrant colors of the Okanagan Valley in her works.

What you may not know about Joan is that she has also worked tirelessly for the Summerland Community Arts Council in the promotion of Arts in the Summerland area. One such example of her efforts is as the tireless volunteer coordinator of gallery sitters. She spends many hours each month organizing up to 48 volunteer sitters per month in the summer out of her roster of over 70. That’s alot of phone calls.

Without her efforts, we would have no one to greet gallery and community visitors and the gallery could not remain open. At our recent AGM it was unanimously voted that Joan should receive a SCAC lifetime membership in honour of her work with volunteers and I was very pleased to present her with this year’s community Arts appreciation award.

Karan Bowyer – SCAC Vice President 2010-2012
